Yo!

Yoyos_1

Another intermission over here. Thanks so much for coming back... really. I think/hope my bloggers-block is starting to lift, and so have given this space a bit of love and affection in the form of a new banner. One of the reasons things have been quiet over here is that my camera broke last week. So, while it's getting serviced I'll be going though iphoto and posting some old pictures. With any luck my camera won't be away too long - I'm already geting twitchy without it.

So, today's olde photo... I've seen these biscuits also referred to as melting moments, but they'll always be yo-yo's to me. Perhaps it's an Australian thing? Everyone has a version of them. My grandma is famous for these in our family, and I make them to her recipe. It has to be said: they're bloody fantastic!

Yo-Yo Biscuits
10-12oz unsalted butter (depending on how buttery you like these things)
4oz custard powder
4oz icing sugar
12oz plain flour
Cream butter and icing sugar. Sift flour and custard powder well and add to creamed mixture. Roll in small balls, press down with fork and and bake in moderate oven/350 degrees for about 20 minutes. When cold, join together with vanilla butter icing and try not to eat too many in one sitting. It's a physical challenge!

Oh, and some of you asked about the print in the photo of our cabinet in my last post. It's a print of a Matisse sketch, found in a local print shop years ago. For anyone interested, I just did a quick search, and it's also available here.

Ok then, I'll be back. And with sewn goods, I promise. :)

Ahhhh yo-yos... I think they were the first biscuit I learnt to cook. (I like Arnott's Yo-Yos too, though I think they are only available in South Aust - how parochial is that!)

What a gorgeous banner! I love it.

Holy moly, those look yummy...

Oh, those look yummy! I've never heard of these little yo-yos and I hate to ask, but could you tell me what we would call custard powder in America? I'd really like to try them -- any cookie with sandwiched frosting has to be good!

oh these looks so so good. must try!

mm they look yummy!! we call them custard creams over here in the UK

Love the banner! If I were'nt still trying to fit back into pre-pregnancy clothes I would so be making those cookies......I can smell them from here..mmmmmm!

Those look so good! Yes, I would like to know what is custard powder also.

Oh yummo yo-yos! Love em but they're not so good for the width of my butt! LOL

Oooh and there I was thinking custard powder is universal!!

Mmmmm, yo-yo biscuits are so yummy! And I love your new banner too - so cute!

Thank you for your mail, and also for the search for the poster online. You're amazing! Truly! Have a happy day!

I'm glad you're back! LOVE the new header graphic! So cute! Take care.

i just love your blog! Have a nice day.

I love your new banner - very cute!

I've just found your blog via Bloesem. Oh, your little bunnies! Monkeys! They're all too, too sweet. I'm looking forward to popping (why does that always come up "pooping" first?) in often.

In the UK we call those Lancashire Nuts.

those look sooo good! please let us non-aussies know what custard powder would be in other parts so we can make some! ;)

the new banner is sooo adorable!

Boy do I miss yo-yo's... must make some, thanks for the recipe. Like I've said befor, it's great the way you make Australia present in a day to day matter....

Yum - my yo-yo recipe is identical to yours, right down to the imperial measurements. I am pretty sure it is my only recipe in imperial! There was quite a while there when I didn't make them because I forgot how to convert. Lucky I now have scales that go both ways :-) Perhaps tomorrow will gbe yo-yo day here too...

i looked up custard powder on google-you can order birds custard powder at amazon-gotta go make them-glad your camera was broken so i could see this recipe!!! thanks

Thanks for the recipe and the inspiration! I made them for Easter weekend. You're right! Once you have one it's impossible not to have another... and another... and another...
