wistful, grumpy. and cupcakes.
A slightly wistful and grumpy post from me today. These are some cupcakes I made for Audrey's recent 4th birthday. I seem to have developed a pregnancy induced glucose intolerance (can't bring myself to call it this, which seems a fairly alarmist tag, although perhaps I'm in denial). So I'm sorry to say I'm off the sugar for the duration of this pregnancy, until I get the all clear. This is such a different pregnancy - I scooted through my first one with not a care in the world! In any case, it's really not that bad, and certainly no big sacrifice to make to ensure the health of this little one - which is clearly the most important thing. It's not like I was mainlining sugar before or anything, but I will miss it. Especially at christmas - bah humbug!

I had gestational diabetes with my second baby too - the diet sucked but I came out alot smaller on the other end of things : P

I had GD too and was pregnant when I owned and ran my bakery! Enjoy snacking 6X a day with protein included! The benefit is you don't have as much weight to lose afterward:)

oh, i'm so sorry to hear this - i just found out that i have it, too :( not looking forward to a sugar-free diet (especially when my morning sickness is stubbornly sticking around at 28 weeks!) but to know that little one is healthy is definitely worth it. it's just a shame about all those christmas indulgences that are lurking around the corner!

I also had Gestational Diabetes with my fourth pregnancy, it was such a shock I cried for a day...pregnancy hormones had well and truly kicked in lol. But once I got used to it the time flew quickly and I was alot trimmer and healthier by time bubs was born than I was to begin with. Ohh and don't always believe what they say about GD babies being huge, I was induced at 38 weeks as baby was supposedly enormous and she was only 7lb 10.Best of luck with everything :)
By the way Erwin is just adorable

Yup, me too! I had GD with my first pregnancy at the tender age of 25! The finger pricking is a pain, but yes it was worth it, I didn't put on too much weight, and my bub came out 7lb 6oz. Here's hoping I can avoid it with my next pregnancy, I somehow think I'll get it again :(

I don't know squat about gestational Diabetes but I know way more than I ever wanted to about Type One (Juvenile Diabetes) because of my almost 7 year old son. We do alot of cooking with Splenda (icky chmical but effective for his sweet tooth) and Stevia. Sorry for your diagnosis and really happy that it was caught!

Oh, that's not good . . . but at least you're not pregnant forever, so there will be sugar again, and it will make it that much sweeter!

I had my GD bloods taken yesterday, so no results as yet.
I hear you on the 'no care in the world' with the first babe. I think the 2nd time around, you know more mums, more births and more babies, and are more aware of all that can go wrong.
Blissful Ignorance was nice though.. while it lasted :)

I have Type 1 and am on my third baby. All were healthy and good sizes (8lbs, and 6lbs) and this one is doing well too. I know it sucks to change your eating habits, but most of it is portion control (not necessarily sweets reduction). One bagel is equivalent to 5 slices of bread and will shoot your blood sugar up more than a more controlled, balanced meal (lower CHO, some protein, etc.). Chocolate (real chocolate) won't send your BS up so fast because it is mostly fat, so I think you can treat yourself to that every now and then too. Stay away from that icing though!! Right to your blood stream! Watch out for your finger too--sometimes (esp. in pregnancy) you may bleed a bit longer (and your sweet dolls might get a bit messy). Good luck!

I too had gestational diabetes with my pregnancy and had to do the whole insulin injections from about week 30 onwards. My little boy was an very average 7 pounds 7 ounces. I have to say that, being my first, I didn't know any different, and now that i'm pregnant again i'm expecting the same story. Perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised. Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy and stay away from the white bread and jasmine rice! xx

I'll jump on the list of moms who had GD - it was hard to say goodbye to my cravings, samosas and pineapple. But you'll weather through. I want to second what someone said about not worrying about the baby's size. They did a c-section on me, thinking the baby was 10 lbs plus but he turned out to be 8lbs 8oz. Good luck, the room is looking great!
